Tease the Eve-Teasing

The Delhi incident on 16th of December, the day when a girl was gang-raped shocked the whole country. It was not for the first time that this made me to give it a thought. I started to analyze my surroundings, read blogs, news and lots of articles to know the reason behind this. The people involved in this iniquity are surprisingly those whom we call “Civilized”. But it shocks when I got to know that those most-of-the-guys are highly educated. No, I am not talking about rape here but another kind of sexual harassment which almost every woman goes through in her life. Eve Teasing. So how am I relating the Delhi incident with this another evil of society? Certainly for some of you there seems no relation but I think there is. Whistles, comments, lewd stares, cheap gestures and a lot more, to derogate the woman, the species to which our mothers, sisters, wives belong to. The doer is unaware of how much a single act of eve teasing can change whole life of an individual. It brings in fear, disgrace, isolation from the society and in some cases even suicides with it.
But as you all are aware what eve teasing is all about, I want to discuss more on why it is done and with what mentality those guys are in who do this heinous act. I have noticed that whenever boys are in a group, then only they use to tease the girls. Those guys in a group think that it is a moment of pride for them when they use to annoy any girl. Normally you will not see any single guy torturing girls in public. Another fact is that men who use do this are especially single, they have never been in any relationship and that’s why they don’t respect girl. It is a kind of outburst because of the frustration caused due to loneliness in their life and they release it on girls in the form of eve teasing. The reason behind this is that I have seen many of my friends who use to do this but as soon as they came in a relationship, they not only stopped such acts but also made a distance from the friends and people who continued to do so.
I also want to talk about another species of men which is completely different. I don’t know whether it comes under this category or not but it is necessary to discuss about them too. There are guys who are friends with girls at schools, colleges or at their workplace. Some of them are very well behaved and mannered in front of the ladies. It is good to be so, but what happens as soon as they are with their male friends making derogatory remarks and commenting on the characters of the women they use to work or spend time with. I don’t feel it is an inch different from the eve teasing. It is just that they are doing on their back and not in front. It becomes hard to believe especially when I see such kind of acts done by the people around me, studying in the premier institutes. Yes, the Gen Y who wants the change in every sector is not ready to change their perceptions about women. It is not any technology which needs to be changed but the mind and therefore it will take a hell lot of time.
Though it is an offence and if not offence then too morally it is not justified but I personally feel that there is a big difference between a rapist and an eve teaser. I mean most of the teasers would not do such a disgrace act. They do it for fun but that doesn’t mean I am advocating them. If you are bringing dishonor to a woman then it is an offense. But eventually it is the Women who have to take the initiative to terminate this evil, show their outrage, because unwittingly they only encourage men to do so by ignoring when they use to tease them. They are even hesitant to tell their parents. It is where they get over women and do this cheap act again and again.

It is a request to the men of the society not to bring the shame especially to your mothers who gave birth to you. Instead you should start to bring the change in you as well as in the surroundings. Or think the other way around; a stranger troubling you unnecessarily. How would you feel then? Or what if a woman in your family going through the same phase? What will you do? I feel happy when I make people realize, those involved in such craps, their mistake and encourage them not to repeat. I hope you people will also respect women around you apart from the ones in your family. Give it a try. Respect them. Take a pledge to curb this evil from the society. You will certainly feel a broad smile on your face if you will become the reason for this change.

Act now or face the worst

What six women did in Kochi is just a beginning. But it is not the first time in the Indian history where a few women bared all to fight for their respect, rights and moreover to live. A similar act took place in Manipur 10 years ago. And I guess it would have had taken lots of guts for them to do this kind of protest.
Anger is definitely coming out but not in the right proportion. It looks like we’re in the 21st century with respect to technology only. But if we take a look over the condition of women, the irony is we’re still in the Iron Age. And not only in India but the countries like US and UK (so-called developed ones), there too the women’s condition is almost same and even worse in other parts of the world.
Though we have heard of rapes in the past yet for the last three-four months it has become a fashion statement in UP. Simultaneously MP is now gaining momentum and is on the same track. A month ago, few women of a political party were protesting against the Home Minister of MP Mr. Babulal Gaur (though Mr. is not required) for what he commented on Rapes. According to a newspaper, before starting their rally they were gossiping, doing touch-ups and other girlie things, making one doubtful as if they were really interested in the protest or just for the sake of protesting or might be it was just an another political agenda of theirs.
Today I read, in a newspaper, that a 10-year old boy raped a girl of the same age. Now this is something shocking as we could have digested it only if an adult had done this.
And there are provisions to punish adults and juveniles but what if a 10-year old commits the same crime. Should we punish him? Or his parents, his teachers, his companions or the whole society around him? We don’t have the answer but I guess we have to think really hard on this.
During my school time, I usually, and most of us, hated the period of Moral Science and just studied it to pass the exam. But now I realize as for what it meant. However a subject is not going to bring the necessary changes. Instead, we have to work on its practical implications. But nobody is daring to take the responsibility. Although parents and teachers do their job responsibly but these acts make us think that if they missed it somewhere. And what about those well educated guys commenting on girls and misbehaving with them? Obviously their parents didn’t ask them to do so.
Like we do our preparation for floods, droughts and at borders etc., in a similar manner, we have to get prepared for these calamities too against women. According to me one of the solutions is to conduct psychological tests for boys, regarding their mentality towards girls, when they take admission in school starting from class 6th, at college level, at the workplace and in every organization. It should be made compulsory. Although, apparently, we need strong and strict laws yet we also have to look on to the possible options to remove its roots.
I salute the spirit of the women of Kochi who did this brave act, but they need more support. And that support too from women only.  Don’t expect anything from ‘Men’ and ‘Men-like-Women’ in this so-called Male-Dominated-Society. This is the high-time girls should start a final movement, instead of depending on ‘others’, or there is a sucking-tomorrow waiting for them. None political party or leader but the 'aam-girls' should have to come out of their homes if they want to stand strong and to make these kinds of protests, a major revolution. Or no doubt, in the near future, women would be facing the worst of all.
